She Doesn’t Want To Wear Hijjab!

Today I had a very interesting conversation with my younger cousin. Turning 10 in august, I am proud to say she is quite easily one of the most intelligent youngsters I know. She can solve rather elaborate math problems and reads at a level far above her years. My aunt and her husband, send them to quranic classes on a regular basis and in some areas, my younger cousin can put me to shame.

So imagine my surprise when sometime into one of my many babysitting sessions (That deserves another post altogether!) She came out with “I don’t wanna wear Hijjab anymore!”.
Assuming this is just another one of our many back and forth verbal sparring sessions, I began questioning her, opting for a simple inquiry of “Why?”, which led to the conversation below!

“Everybody says your hijjab isn’t nice. You should take that off you know!” She alleged.

To which I replied “What?”

“Its true!” She exclaimed!

“Who says that?” I ventured.

“ Everybody in my class and before, I only used to wear it because my hair wasn’t nice. But now hooyo says its long, so I don’t have to have it plaited anymore. I don’t wanna cover my hair, why do you have to cover your hair anyways?” She replied whilst lovingly gazing at herself in the mirror and twirling her hair!

To which I laughed, knowing she could answer her own question with the necesary quranic verse and continued my line of questioning! “But why don’t you want to wear your hijjab?”

“Because I look nice without my hijjab!” She says tilting her head sideways and smiling at me knowingly.

“Who told you that you look nice without it?” I continue.

She grins and after a moments pause she states, “I saw myself in the mirror!”

I laugh and she feigns anger and hollers!

“Why do we have to wear hijjab and men don’t? That’s not fair on us, because even when we’re praying we have to get ready and put so much stuff on!” At which I continue laughing.

“I’m not gonna wear a hijjab for two years.” She huffs and stomps in mock anger!

“Good Luck! Your moving to Egypt soon, let me know how that works out for you!!!” Interjects my sister before leavning the room!

Knowing my cousin as I do, I would be the first to say that this was a seemingly innocent ‘joke’, However, it still hit a nerve with me! Many a young Muslim girl makes the same statement on an almost daily basis. Could this be a case of ‘In Jesting Comes Truth?’
Are our younger siblings trying to tell us that they indeed, do not want to wear the hijjab?
Is this a classic example of “When In Rome Do As The Romans Do” or ‘When In The West Do As The Westerners Do?’

My mother often tells me that “a people follow the religion of the land in which they live, and the longer we (Muslims) have children in non-Muslim countries they will eventually take the religion of that land”. This is a statement that I actually very strongly agree with and a statement which is also supported by the past. To give but one example would be the “Barawanese” people in Somalia, who following Portugal’s occupation of the city of Moghadishu (from 1506 to 1758 A.D) settled in Somalia and took the religion of Islam.

I wonder! How many generations can we breed in the West, before the religion of Somalis changes?

Dude!! Egypt is turning out to be wicked fun (apart from the exams) but yeah I have made so many friends from all over the arab world I dont know who to hang out with at times!

I like best the Kuwaiti and Palestinian friends I have made as they are the most mature and “cool” to hang around with. The Kuwaitis are really nice with their awesome sunglasses that only they can rock. The Palestinians cook awesome food man..and guess what, they have invited me back home to Jerusalem for the EID period where we have 10 days off!

DUDE! Im going to Palestine…specifically Jerusalem and then I am off to Tel Aviv - the capital of the Israeli Republic. The best thing is they have awesome beaches where the girls r bangin’ and the waves are kickin’. Oh yeah, Ill visit masjid Al-Aqsa aswell

Footprints in the Sand

Do they signify anything?

When I came across this picture today I thought to myself look at those footprints- the only thing that can act as proof of what once tread/walked/travelled over it, the sand that is. Quite similar to a memory dont you think…?

No.

You see, with memory it tends to stay behind for a long, long time. Perhaps forever even but the footprints are lost after a few hours….sometimes within minutes….

So it is upon that thought I quickly flicked back to my most precious memories…my most cherished “memoires” as the french love to say and realised that hey…I have many happy “moments” to reminiscence on. Infact I realised things could have never been better at this stage of my life.

I mean, I have great parents which care about and love me. Parents who are spending $11,000 worth on my Medicine course giving me a chance to build myself a life which they never had at my age. A debt which I can truly never pay back to my mother and father but they shall reap the rewards as soon as I graduate inshaAllah.

I dont even need to mention the rest of my family or close friends cus they know how much I love and respect them.

Therefore I think what I am trying to say is I dont need bullshit in my life. I really really really do not NEED or WANT any stupid confrontations or mind boggling situation or even worse YOUR problems to deal with. I have enough shit in my life to deal with like my time consuming medicine course. Dont make your problems mine.

Yallah, enough ramblings for today.

So I recently severed connections with someone that I decided wasn’t much of a friend.

To me a friend is like family, you take care of them, you provide for them, because assumably they are watching out for your best interest(s). A friend is not an acquaintance. People often have a lot of acquaintances, but not necessarily a lot of friends. You care about the people a friend cares about, not out of any personal interest, but because our friendships form webs of interlinking interests.

The reason I have severed this connection is simply because of one thing; betrayal.

What is the punishment of betrayal in the world of the xaasid?

Body:

Two broken legs.
Two broken arms.
Broken Nose.
Broken Jaw.
Bruised Eyes.
Broken Ribs.

Car - Total and utter destruction.

Babysitting

I love my family you know. Its amazing to see how many kids there are in the “Elmi” family - that’s from my mothers side. Right now, in Cairo, Egypt, same building, there’s 17 kids (that’s including me and my other 2 siblings). 17 kids in total - WOW!

As we speak, I am babysitting 10 kids as the other 7 are upstairs in my flat under supervision by my father haha. Its like a jungle you know. I cant even write properly, just look how long my sentences are!

In Egypt, all houses are flats/apartments. Do not get me wrong, their HUGE and built like a penthouse with 1-2 “jakoozi’s” and massive receptions (living rooms). Just wait til I upload pictures of my place - you will be amazed.

Anyway the point of this post is that seeing all these kids happily running about and what not, has made me realise how badly I want one of my “own”. I mean, who would not want to be a father? Have children which are yours and obey you. I don’t know.. I think its got to do with actually finding the right woman to be the mother of your child and then actually being blessed with children. I think I have found the right one by the way…its as simple as getting it on…the child production that is haha

Anyway, I actually enjoyed my session with the kids - I say that because the parents just came back right now hehe. Do you happen to babysit all the time? I know most people hate it but being with my 5 month yr old cousin was a blast! I put him to sleep in no time hehe.

Exams, Exams and Exams!

Man here I was complaining about Medical physiology just last week and now I have a Medical Biochemistry exam waiting for me tomorrow morning.

Talk about stress hey! Tis the reason I have not been blogging as much now a days but tomorrow I’ll have more pictures of the faculty of medicine and couple of my friends inshaAllah. Stay tuned folks.
